For the upperclassmen who are members of the forum, please contribute to this biggrin

I am still thinking of what to include in this topic. I'll post as soon as I gather enough info from my fellow upperclassmen. wink

Here's a collection of tips i retrieved from last year's orsem forum. they were posted by the different upperclassmen last year :D
  • huwag kang mahihiyang magtagalog.
  • Never, EVER cram. Always study in advance.
  • meet your new best friend, AISIS.
  • Good random numbers will not really matter until you're in third year. From first to second, you're mostly listed for most of your subjects. So don't stress. Hehe.
  • Laging tandaan na may dress code na.:P
  • Huwag gawing bahay ang Drew's at Cantina. Minsan-minsan lang.
  • Join an org. Don't wait til you're sophomores.
  • dont wear slippers when going to Xavier Hall, Library, RSF, Registrar's Office
  • There are two bells that ring... Yung first bell yun yung parang "warning". yung second bell marks the start of the class..
for example, 1030 ang class mo, the first bell will ring at 1020. kung may class ka before, paalisin na kayo ng prof mo to get to your next class. (happened to my unfortunate blockmate for a whole sem last year)hehe. Maraming purposes yung 10 minute grace period. It can be the time for finishing unfinished homeworks, cramming for exams, etc. :P
  • When working in groups, siguraduhin mong matino mga group mates mo. Groupwork with bad groupmates is the downfall of good Ateneans. I'm not saying na sumbong agad kapag hindi top ng class yung nakuha mong partner. I'm saying makes sure group work is GROUP work. Ingat kayo diyan. Hahaha.
  • You'll learn all about your course during the OrSem, third day I think. If you have questions, you can always ask there, and it's comparitively easy to shift naman kapag first year ka pa lang. :D
  • Haha, you'll meet AISIS, everyone's best friend. No really, try not to lose your patience with this service, because it can only do so much for every Atenean. Haha, basta.
  • About the sleepless nights in certain courses, well admittedly there are some courses which are heavier than others, but personally I didn't have any majors (subjects having to do with my course) during first year, and I still had lots of sleepless nights. Or at the very least sleep late nights.
If it works for you, why not
  • As I mentioned earlier, HINDI KAILANGAN MAWALAN NG TULOG PARA PUMASA SA ATENEO. Tamang time management lang
  • The urban legends about benches are grossly exaggerated. While there are benches that are "owned" by certain groups (Babble, ASSOC, etc.), most benches are free-for-all.
  • If you want a good parking space, try to come to school at around 8:30 or earlier. And please, if your parking skills are less than stellar, practice! Student parking slots have no lines that mark each slot but that doesn't mean you can hog the parking space.
  • Sleepless nights can be avoided with proper time management.
  • Most profs are turned off by students haggling for grades (i.e. asking a prof to give you a +1 so you can get an A instead of a B+). But it sometimes works :p
  • AISIS - It really stands for Ateneo's Incompetent System for Incoming Students. Or pwede ring Annoying Internet Service Incapable of Serving. Ang masasabi ko lang, good luck, because AISIS is a nightmare, lalo na pag unahan ng klase. Last week, namakyaw ba naman ng Ph 103/104 classes, naubusan tuloy ako. Hehe.
  • Food - Really, there are two reasons to stay in Ateneo: One, good education. Two, Manangs! Try it the first few weeks of Freshman year, kasi later on, your sked might be to busy, so you probably won't be able to take long lunches. The food in the caf is... ok.
  • Fashion - Please po. Wear simple clothes. Lalo na kung Freshamn ka. One of the surefire ways you can tell a freshman from an upperclassman is that the freshman is probably the one overdressed. Literally, one step above sleeping clothes is acceptable (unless you plan om going to places that require the dress code). Sa PE, your prof will most likely assign a uniform.
  • Teachers - The Legends: Dacanay, Totanes, Ferriols, David. Ang Pilosopiya sa Ateneo ay isang karanasang hindi ninyo malilimutan, especially if you take it under a "legend" prof.  Ferriols basically brought philosophy in the Philippines. He chose to write in Filipino, pero may nagsabi sa akin na kung sa English daw siya nag-sulat at namilosopiya, baka nabago na niya ang mukha ng western philosphy. *inhale* *exhale*  (May have been a slight exaggeration, but the man really is so respected).
  • MERON!!!!!!! Haha, in Junior year, you will all be subjected to the awesome secrets of Meron Philosophy.
  • The Bench Culture - is pontless. But yeah, some benches belong to certain groups.
  • Students - Mabababait at accomodating ang mga Atenista. Hindi tayo mga conyo. Walang maarte sa Ateneo. Kung may makita kayong maarte, sapakin nyo. LOL. But seriously, Ateneans are warm, freidnly, and very approachable.
  • Always bring an extra ID cord or a lanyard. Pangfake in case you forgot your IDs. Worked for me everytime.
  • MOST Ateneans if they see celebrity students in campus, they "ignore" them.
  • Freshies are always seen in groups. That's why it's so easy to recognize them.
  • Enjoy your early dismissals, if you have ones. Or if you have long breaks, Matteo or Lib na lang kayo pumunta.
  • Be active in at least one course-related org if you're planning to apply for JTA. It will help.
  • The Dollhouse? Let's just say they're a fierce bunch... :))
And here are the tips posted below:
  • most subjects in your first and second year are pre-enlisted. ang mapipili mo lang: pe, natsci (well, most of the sose people, may mga naka-assign nang natsci, which are usually higher), nstp (sa second year), and free electives (if you have any). in short, ndi ikaw ang magaayos ng sched mo
  • may microwave! =))
  • manang's, harap ng covered courts. pinakamasarap nilang food ay liempo (well for others. hehe)
  • Pag biglang tumahimik lahat at huminto sa ginagawa nila, national anthem time na siguro. that's every M-W-F @ 8:25am and T-Th @ 8:55am. so whenever you hear it, pay your respect to our flag and our country by pausing for a while.
  • Wear your ID whenever you're in the Loyola Schools Campus. Hassle kasi pag nahuli ka ng guard since you'll have to write an apology/promise letter para maclear yung hold order mo. if not, you won't be able to view your grades or enlist for the next term.
  • The library is a quiet zone. They do get your ID numbers if they would spot you making noise. ID numbers with the library staff = hold order
  • Macci (Matteo Ricci) is the only study hall where you can eat and make noise. HAHA. so have a table reserved for your barkada or block during your break time.
  • Always bring an umbrella. It might add a few pounds to your bag, but still, it always pays to bring one. On rainy days, Ateneo doesn't look as nice as it is during a sunny day.
  • Start making a Yahoo! account now! Haha! No seriously. Your Yahoo! Mail page will be your bestfriend starting... NOW :D Almost all your classes will have a yahoogroup (for online consultation, announcements, etc.) so better have your Yahoo! account. ;)
  • DO NOT EVER TRY to ask anyone where the TBA room is / who is Mr./Ms. TBA kasi walang ganun. :D TBA means To Be Announced.
  • bring your own baunan! :)) sana may discount pa rin XD
  • Always have extra money saved just for photocopying readings.

manang's, harap ng covered courts. pinakamasarap nilang food ay liempo (well for others. hehe).

kung maaga kayo dadating sa orsem, most likely dun muna kayo tatambay before entering cov courts.

Additional Facts:
*Pag biglang tumahimik lahat at huminto sa ginagawa nila, national anthem time na siguro. that's every M-W-F @ 8:25am and T-Th @ 8:55am. so whenever you hear it, pay your respect to our flag and our country by pausing for a while.
*Wear your ID whenever you're in the Loyola Schools Campus. Hassle kasi pag nahuli ka ng guard since you'll have to write an apology/promise letter para maclear yung hold order mo. if not, you won't be able to view your grades or enlist for the next term.
*The library is a quiet zone. They do get your ID numbers if they would spot you making noise. ID numbers with the library staff = hold order
*Macci (Matteo Ricci) is the only study hall where you can eat and make noise. HAHA. so have a table reserved for your barkada or block during your break time.

Always bring an umbrella. It might add a few pounds to your bag, but still, it always pays to bring one. On rainy days, Ateneo doesn't look as nice as it is during a sunny day.
