I was wondering kasi if I should buy one this June or wait hanggang second sem kasi may major na.
And, ano ba ang mas ok? Yung mga 14" or mga 10" for college? Considerig the specs and all. XD
i really think na convenient yung merong laptop para sa any student ESPECIALLY sa college. hmm. hindi naman nila siguro irerequire.. pero im sure it'll be an advantage kung meron. pero. practically speaking, kung.. hindi ka naman nagd-dorm or galing sa saang malayo tulad ko.. siguro.. may PC ka sa bahay.. okay na yun. parang ang awkward naman na araw2 kang may bitbit na laptop kahit di kelangan.
I'm an ID major meaning super convenient kung may laptop lalo nang umiikot sa adobe programs ang course ko. I'm pretty sure most of my blockmates will be using their laptops for that while i think I'll be spending most of my time in the Mac laboratory XD
i think laptops are the most convenient. on the contrary, my parents say otherwise. they're getting me a pc coz they insist i'll lose it! :[
well, laptop is really convenient, except for some cons. one, limited ang outlets. so unahan sa mga saksakan :D kung internet ang habol mo, hindi lahat ng spot, may wifi. and to use wifi, kailangan mong magregister. hahaha
wala. may bayad kasi ang pagbuburn. regarding viruses: in my experience, hindi naman ganoon katindi ang mga virus sa RSF and Matteo. not sure with the other terminals
I actually just got a Toshiba Portege m800. A friend that just graduated from my course said that a laptop is a MUST if youre dorming. He said if you start your required papers only when you get home, you'll have a HARD time finishing it.
Laptops are great for reports and presentations, but don't be pressured to buy if you still do not own one. As long as you have a personal desktop computer at home (or in your dorm) you'll be fine. Ateneo has a lot of computers for the students' use, so don't worry about it too much. Sulitin niyo ang library fees and internet access fees niyo! Use the facilities that the school provides. :)
Ang may kailangan ng laptops - computer~ majors. Pero I guess wala pa naman kayong major subjects sa first year (kung meron man, 1 or 2 lang yun, depende sa course).
Reasons why people have laptops:
1. May kinacram 2. May presentation 3. Gusto lang :D
Pero hindi siya necessity talaga. Pampabigat lang yun ng bag. :P And yes, gaya ng sabi ni jrcb, may mga computer rooms sa school, so don't worry about it.
For taking down notes, pen and paper/notebook pa rin. :)
Isa pang rason kung bakit bumili ako ng laptop ay, nung Open House, my mom noticed that all the places/rooms we were in, there were individual plugs for, we assumed, laptops. So we concluded that if the school had to provide that much plugs, that meant that almost everybody had one. O:

for one, limited ang plugs, mga less than 6 plugs per room only. tapos 1 is for the projector, 1 is for ohp. others are for electric fan, others are free pero malayo sa chairs. usually nasa harap.

Ah ganun po? Since "halls" (I dun really know what theyre called it's just they have looong continuous tables that have plugs under platform) and not the regular class chairs po ung napuntahan namin nung Open House, akala po namin, ganun na lahat. O:

wait. bakit parang wala akong maalalang may ganyang description :))
actually, she ordered the latest macbook (13.3", 2.4 GHz) through ateneo, she fetch the notebook just a while ago, hehe, sabi nya, original price daw is 95k, pero pag atenista ka, 78k nalang
and also, I'm a big fan of laptops too, kung naghahanap kau ng magandang laptop, I'll suggest either Lenovo X200 or HP Touchsmart tx2z series, very practical, especially the latter, hehe

AHHH. Alam ko na, yan siguro yung SOM 210, where you had your Accounting open house class, tama ba? :)
Usually, Management classes ang nandun sa SOM 210.
Some people take down notes with their laptops. O kaya naman may presentations. Or some are accessing old PowerPoint lectures, etc. I still trust pen and paper, hindi nanakawin eh.

i think if there are PCs naman that can be used for free in the campus, buying a laptop is not really a necessity... it's very convenient though, and syempre iba pa rin ung may sarili kang laptop... but if you think it would be unnecessary and if you're still to buy one, better think twice (or more) about it.. :)

Well, nung freshie rin ako, nagpanic din ako since I thought laptop is a necessity. Peroo, hindi naman pala hahaha!!. It is convenient lang talaga if you are a crammer and gusto mong magsulat ng paper ANYWHERE in the campus, magsurf ng net and all.

Not everybody. Pero since binabayaran niyo yung Wi-Fi then at least use it :P Pero kung tight yung budget niyo. DONT PUSH IT kasi hindi talaga siya kailangan :) Maraming computers ang Ateneo that you can use for you needs :P
@arvin: seryoso??? may discount na ganun kalaki?? haha.

In general, a laptop is helpful for convenience but it's not a necessity. Almost every spot where it's comfortable to study/research is a wifi hotspot (ex. Matteo Ricci, all floors of the library, Kostka ext, and even the caf if you can bear with the noise). It's also helpful for some class presentations.
Then again, if you're not a crammer, you won't have a problem since marami rin namang time na kakaunti lang gumagamit nung computers. For the class presentations, you'll also most likely have a blockmate who has a laptop, so that should be enough.

It depends on your professor.

Having a laptop isn't a necessity in Ateneo. A few people swear by it, but personally, I never found bringing one very useful. It helps, of course, having your own computer at home or in your dorm.
I only bring a laptop whenever we have presentations (you can plug your laptop to the LCD projectors available in some classrooms). In that case, smaller, lighter laptops are recommended. Mine had a big, wide screen and was heavy, but I chose to buy one of those because I wanted to play games. Hahaha! If you only need a laptop for work, just buy the smaller ones so you don't get tired lugging them around campus.
Ateneo has wi-fi, by the way. I only used it for one semester though. It wasn't very reliable or fast. Besides, there are desktop computers with internet available for student use around campus. I know of about 4-5 computer labs. There are also a lot of internet cafes along Katipunan if you're in a pinch... or if you want to play LAN games. Hehehe.

is the eliazo dorm safe to leave my laptop in? bec. my parents are thinking of buying me a laptop for school...my dad says i can't go to college without a computer. but the thing is i don't want to lug around a (potentially heavy) computer all the time so i was wondering if it's safe to leave it in the dorm nalang. because if not, i'll probably tell them to wait nalang until I really need it talaga.

i'm having a hard time deciding which laptop to buy. :P i'm considering toshiba or lenovo, though. suggestions anyone? thanks! :)
I owned a Lenovo! Lasted over two years. I'd leave it turned on for days sometimes (abuso sa fixed fee sa dorm namin. HAHA). It would've lasted longer had it not fallen down a flight of stairs...
I'd recommend getting a Lenovo. :D

^i own an ibm thinkpad which i think is a transitionary model from when lenovo took over the thinkpad line. it still has the thinkpad exterior but when you turn it on it says lenovo na. weird nga eh. anyway we're not buying a new one na i'm bringing this to the dorm

Yeah, I'm planning on buying a laptop, since I'm very famous for cramming in my home. I already decided on the MSI GX620X gaming laptops, since it has the best cost-to-performance ratio. It has an nVidia GeForce 9600M GT 512 mb video card, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, and a Centrino 2 2.0 Ghz processor. 50K for all that.
I advise you guys who will use intensive applications to get a powerful laptop, believe me. Cheap notebooks and netbooks are generally portable, but not that helpful. You will notice some lag when using even simple programs especially if the device in question has an Atom or Core Duo 1.5-1.8 Ghz processor and one of those onboard Intel GMA series video cards.
