First Day of Classes

Since the OrSem was postponed, hindi ko talaga alam kung anong mangyayari kapag first day na. What are we to expect on the first day? What should we bring to school with us? What usually happens? Wahh! Kabado!

Just bring some paper and a pen to write down reminders from your new professors, a map, and your class schedule. Oh, and an umbrella. Bring your own food containers and jugs if you plan to take out food from the cafeterias. Your classes on the first day will either be an opportunity to get to know your block, or will be uneventful. Whatever happens, stick with your block between classes!

When you said a few notebooks, does that mean we will still have one notebook per subject, like in high/grade school? :)

You can actually have fillers as notebook. as long as you have a place to write your notes :D

What to bring on first day?

  1. Pen
  2. notebook/paper/whatever thing you will use to take down notes/reminders/etc
  3. schedule (or you could just memorize it)
  4. money
  5. ID
  6. baunans (if you plan to eat outside caf)
  7. umbrella (just in case) [upperclass, please add if i missed something]

usually, profs just give their syllabus, and discuss it. some start with lesson already (i've experienced this )

Food in the caf is served in reusable wares, so you can't take them out of the cafeteria. If you plan to get your food in there and eat somewhere else, you'd have to bring food containers for the servers to place your order in.

You're welcome. :)

Usually profs discuss the syllabus, some rules and reminders and stuff like that on the first day. I don't know about lessons on the first day though; my English prof just threw in a game related to our first lesson and class was over. The next meeting we had our first lesson; it's all in the syllabus anyway, so you'd know what topics are coming up next.

You probably don't need to bring a notebook for EACH of your classes just yet. You might not need them sometimes, depending on the teaching style of the prof. Just one notebook or a new set of pad paper will do for your first day.

Oh, watch out. You will have diagnostic tests, usually, for your Math and Filipino classes to determine whether you should be taking the regular classes or the basic classes. We had our diagnostic test for Filipino on the first meeting, so don't be surprised if you have to take them too. You don't really have to prepare for it; there really isn't any way for you to. I'm just telling you this so you won't be caught off guard. :p

Which is more advisable, spring binders(those that have separators only) or the one with fillers? :D

halos pareho lang naman yun eh... depende rin sa'yo. i'm using the one with the spring binder with divisions. :)

I find the paper in fillers na medyo manipis. Madiin ako magsulat eh. May tinatagong galit sa mundo. LOL! :D
Baka binders with separations na lang din siguro ako. Bahala na! That's what college is about, after all. Discovery. :D

Regular classes ~ errr... regular classes for your course
Basic classes ~ you would be put here if the Ateneo thinks you do not have what it takes to attend regular classes (basing it on your diagnostic test) This class is more of like a review on what you are expected to know already

Basic classes? Does it take up the whole sem?

Basic subjects will take up the whole sem like any other subject but will receive no credit (0 units) except for the slow/basic Math 18 track.

By the way, as previously mentioned, diagnostic tests will be given during the first day but only for English and Filipino. For English, I think it will only be given to those already enrolled in basic English (En 10). Those in advanced placement (En 12) will have none. I'm not sure about those in the regular (I was in the basic Eng track). For Filipino, it will be given for all since basic Fil (Fil 10) sections will only be formed after the diagnostic tests and sorry, wala yatang advanced placement for Filipino.

In Math it will depend on your course. Either the first long test (for Math 1 or 11) or the first two (for Math 18A&B) is/are your diagnostic test/s. If you fail these, these will be cancelled but you will be required to go the basic track. Again, those in advanced placement (Math 21) will have no diagnostic test.

Basta sa first day, except for those who'll take diagnostic tests for English and Filipino, the SOP is for professors to discuss the course syllabus. How they will introduce themselves (some just mention their name), get to know you (most go over the class list and/or assign you to submit an index card next meeting with the info they'll ask for), and what to do after discussing the syllabus (some dismiss students early; some start with the first lesson) depends on the professors.

Btw, it would be a good idea to start preparing 1x1 ID pictures for your classes and the orgs you plan to join. Profs usually have you submit an index card with your photo on it. :)

If its a zero unit, you are graded as either S (satisfactory, meaning you met the requirements) or U (unsatisfactory). You have to pass your basic subjects so that you can move on to the regular subjects.

yes, the english dept will screen all. If your english block is an E-section, you're in the basic track. If its R, you're regular. If M, you're merit

Just bring a pen, a note book and a file case(where you can put the class syllabus that your profs will hand out).

During breaks, try going to the Caf or Matteo Ricci study hall to hang out.

Yeah, grabe. I got lost twice. Looking for the Registrar and during the CEP. So I asked these upperclassmen where the Escaler Hall was, and instead of just pointing where it is, they hatid you there. Twice na un. Babait nila. Tapos yung hinahanap ko yung registrar, umuulan pa yun. Hinatid pa talaga ako sa mga mismong window ng registrar. Kaya don't be afraid to ask questions. XD

Hey, someone said that there are confirmed cases of A(H1N1) virus in the High School department, but I doubt that this will affect our first day of classes. Any thoughts about this?
