Ateneo has been an integral part of my involvement in nation building as well as social welfare and political interest.
The Sumilao Farmer's fight for CARP extensions was something that really opened my eyes to the social injustice that a lot of us are aware of but don't know or don't care to address. Ateneo has given me opportunities to help out.
taken from Omi "Ka Rene Penas, farmer leader and paralegal from Sumilao, was ambushed at around 11pm last night, 5June. He was on his way home when he was shot. We are condemning this brutal death of a leader who lived a life fighting for agrarian reform and social justice: for their land in Sumilao, for other land cases, and for CARPER. Pls pray for his loved ones and for justice to be served."
It's really frustrating. Many have already been murdered to discourage protests and now this happens. It's really heavy on my part since i actively participated in the events held by ateneo to support the Sumilao farmers and CARPER.
I hope, freshies, that your stay in ateneo will also encourage you to participate in the battle against social injustice. Not only as ateneans, but as filipinos.
